My new studio!

I've wanted a studio in my house for a while, but just didn't have the funds to do it.  So over time we decided we would be able to do it.  It is finished and I'm in love.  I love my lighting and my backdrops, my props, the color on my walls my canvas' and everything about it.
It is so nice to have a place to do my work...and that I can shoot no matter what the weather is.
Yesterday I did a little impromptu shoot with my girls and Alexa my niece.
I am in love with having this little space for my business!

This was the test shot! That's why it's not centered...but I LOVE IT ANYWAY!

My Independence Day!

{This is a lengthy...personal post...so if you have no interest in my life and struggles and how far I've come, be warned...if you care...then you should read this.}

CONGRATULATIONS SELF....TODAY IS YOUR INDEPENDENCE DAY!

{I am seriously sitting here with tears in my eyes and a big smile on my face!}

Today I am declaring my independence from a very long and trying battle with bulimia or 'Ed' (eating disorder).  I am ONE year free from self induced purging!  I have worked so hard and it has been so tough.
To say this is a huge milestone is an understatement.

I'm going to go back to 4 years ago so you can all see the journey I've had.

Four years ago this past January I received a phone call and it went something like this.

Me:  "Hello?"
Kamille (my dear friend) : "Are you making yourself throw up everyday?"
Me:  "Huh?"
Kamille:  "Tell me are you?"
Me: "Why?"
Kamille: "Just tell me!"
Me: "you tell me why you would ask that."
Kamille: "Because last night Clint and I went to the temple and all I could think about was  you and that something was wrong. We came home and I went to bed and I had a dream about you.  I was calling and calling you and you didn't answer so I went over to your house and your mom was there and answered the door.  I asked where you were and she said 'Kandis can't talk to you right now, we found her on the floor passed out cause she's been making herself throw up everything.'  So tell me are you?"
Me: "I don't have a problem."
Kamille: "are you?"
Me: "Maybe"
Kamille: "you need to stop"
Me:  "I don't want to, and I can stop anytime."
Kamille: "I'm going to tell Dave."
Me: "he already knows" (this was a lie)
Kamille: "then I'm going to tell your mom"
this is when panic hit, I couldn't lie about my mom knowing because she would know my mom wouldn't be okay with it.
Me: "If you tell my mom I'll hate you."
Kamille: "well I'd rather you hate me, then you die."
Kamille:  "I'll give you till Monday to decide what you're going to do, then I'm telling" (this was a Saturday morning.)

I was so mad at her for putting me in this spot.  I didn't want anyone to know, especially family.

Monday came and I asked her not to tell, but I would talk to my bishop about it.

Meanwhile Dave and I had been planning a cruise and I was really excited about it.  I had a moment on this Monday when I thought. "I can eat whatever I want and throw it up."
This is when I KNEW I had a problem.
Up to that moment I don't remember thinking "I'm going to eat this and throw it up."  This was the first time I had it planned out.  This scared me.  This is when I knew this was a problem.

Tuesday came and I was at YW when the bishop came up to me and asked if I were okay (he didn't know anything.)  I asked him if we could talk.  So we went into his office and I ended up telling him about how I was feeling about food and weight, and how the conversation went with my friend, and that I might just have a problem.  He gave me a number to call so I could get help.

I told Kamille about my visit.  But that wasn't good enough for her.  She called Dr. Laura. Yes THE Dr. Laura.  Dr Laura told her that it didn't matter that I was a grown women, I was killing myself and she needed to tell my mother.  And that I needed help.  Kamille called my mom.  I felt so betrayed.
Now I owe her my life.

The next week I called the number I received from my Bishop and made an appointment with some lady named Michelle.

I was scared to death to talk to someone about it.  I just knew that when I walked into there she would look at me and think "you need an eating disorder, you aren't that skinny....you could lose a few pounds." or "You don't look like you have an eating disorder."  or "you are really sick and we are going to have to take you away from your family for 3 months and you'll be in a center with others like you."  All three of those thoughts scared me.
But I went to the appointment.

When I arrived at my appointment I thought "I'm not going to share anything."  But Michelle made it so easy to talk.  She told me at this appointment "You have bulimia." I told her
"I don't think I do."
She let me believe that.  But told me I should come back.
She gave me two books to read.
I read one begrudgingly as a "homework" because I'm a people pleaser and that's what I do.  But I still was okay not getting better.
The book I read was actually really great.  It's called 'Life without Ed."
I related to the girl in the book.
That scared me.  Maybe I really had a problem.

I would continue to see Michelle she told me that this path to recovery was hard but I could do hard things.  Oh boy was she right!!

My eating disorder had overtaken my life where I wasn't living for me I was living to impress the world around me.  To be liked by everyone..even those I would never meet.
When I would go to the mall I would buy Elle lunch but I couldn't eat even though I was starving because people would see me and think "why is that fatty eating that?!".
I would go into a store and was afraid that everyone in that store would say or think "she is much to big to be shopping in this store."
I wouldn't buy clothes because the tag said 'large' and if I bought the 'large' label tag it was admitting that I was large.
Ed would go every where with me.  He was at every family function and every life event.  Church was the worst.  Ed always had me comparing myself to all these other beautiful, crafty, perfect women.  And I wasn't good enough.
But when I purged or didn't eat....I was better then them, I had more control...more then them.

I started going to a group therapy for others who had eating disorders and the first time I went I was so worried that I would walk into the room and I wouldn't look like any of those women.  I was stunned when I got there and I saw the variety of women who was in this group.  99% of the women you would never look at and think "she has an eating disorder".  It taught me that eating disorders have NO prejudice and no limitations...anyone can be affected by it.

Over the next three years I discovered why in fact I had an eating disorder.  As most eating disorders are not about being thin, or food as most may think.  Eating disorders start because of something deeper.  A lot of eating disorders start because of childhood abuse.  I am grateful that my eating disorder wasn't because of abuse as I was a loved child and lived a charmed life.
I learned that I had a much different reason for the reason I battled so long with an eating disorder.

A lot of events lead up to why I started engaging in eating disorder behaviors that ultimately turned into a full fledged eating disorder.  The last being when I was in high school I was told by a teacher that the reason I didn't make a specific dance team was because I am short, and because that my weight really shows.  I loved dancing and I NEVER wanted to not be able to do something I loved because of the way I looked.
After that the battle began.  But she was just the final straw.  There was things prior that began to tear open the hole of hurt that later the eating disorder would attempt to fill.

I learned that I always wanted people to praise me and like me.  I needed positive affirmation.  I wanted those who I would never meet to like me, just in case one day I ran into them.  I always had to dress the best and have the best makeup and best hair.  I needed to be the most witty and the most friendly.  I had to be the best.  This need for perfection and need for praise was a strong basis for my eating disorder.  Ed made me feel that he could make me perfect..he was perfection.

When I wanted to get pregnant with Ava I knew that God wouldn't give me another child while I abused my body so badly.  So I began to take treatment more seriously.  Although I kept in my mind "after I have a baby I can go back to the way things were to lose the weight again."

After years of trying to have another baby and much money spent on fertility treatments we were finally pregnant.  I promised myself I wouldn't purge..that I would be healthy for this baby.

After Ava was born it was hard again.  I engaged again and again in the eating disorder, but the difference was I hated that I was doing it.  It made me feel bad. I just couldn't stop. The eating disorder took a turn though it no longer was telling me "you are doing this so you can be better then everyone."  It was telling me "you are nothing."  I got a lot of "you see you're a failure you gave in."
I began to stop living.  I would go through the motions, but I was afraid to use my talents, because I was afraid that people would judge me.  So I would dream of all the things I would do if I knew nobody would judge me.
And I dreamed and dreamed and dreamed.  But I would never be free from this eating disorder because I was nothing...I was a failure, because I wasn't thin, I wasn't the perfect mom and not everyone liked me.

Then a turning point happened.  I had served in the Young Womens in my ward for YEARS.  We are talking 4 years in this ward and 3 1/2 in the previous ward.  I knew nothing but the YW's.  Dave and I were called to work with the Young Single Adults. I was devastated.  It must be because I have an eating disorder that Lord wouldn't let me work with the YW's any more.  He was punishing me.  About 2 months leading up to this release I hadn't engaged in eating disorder behaviors.  Now I had a major set back and had many episodes of engaging.
Then the healing really began.  The 3 years of treatment clicked.  I learned that I wanted to live.
I learned that it's okay that not everyone has to like me, or approve of me.  It's okay to fail sometimes, it's okay to shine.  It's okay to be me.

There were many times in my life that I felt that I was God's one mistake.  That he made everything perfect in his eyes..but he failed with me.  How could he create someone who hated herself how could he love me when I hated myself so much?  I began to realize that all along God was trying to tell me that I was perfect to him.  But I needed to accept that.

This is when I decided to start my passion for photography and put myself out there. I decided that it doesn't matter if not everyone loves it, but I love it..and that God gave me this talent to develop and share.  I stopped always worrying what others may think of me, but what God thinks of me.
I started to become the best me I could be.

I have now realized that I haven't gone through this trial for me, but to help others.
I am so excited to start a program that will reach out to women and teens that will teach them to love the genes that they were given.  To boost their self esteem.  I KNOW this is why I have gone through this trial.

I wrapped up my last session with Michelle who I respect and love so much and she asked me "So what are you going to do now?"
After a brief thought I said "I'm going to live."
I'm not going to worry about looking like a Sports Illustrated model in a swim suit.  I'm not going to worry about what the teenage girl working at the store in the mall thinks of me.  Instead I am going to be the best me I can be.  I'm going to teach my girls that God doesn't make mistakes.  That the 'body flaws' that we see are his way of making us different.  I'm going to reach out to those who are struggling with their own body image issues and their own feelings of inadequacy and help them to know they are perfectly perfect because the worlds jeans don't have to fit our genes.

I'm going to live.
So today I have claimed my independence from a long LONG battle from a nasty thing I call Ed.  I NO longer have an eating disorder. I am RECOVERED from an eating disorder and I am free!

If you or someone you know has an eating disorder it is not something to take lightly, they need help.  It is an epidemic that is sweeping the nation and we need to acknowledge it and help them through it.

I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for a few wonderful people who helped me through the darkest hours.
Kamille, for making me GET help!
Dave, for being by my side the entire time.
My parents for knowing not to judge.
My girls for giving me strength
Michelle Workman my fabulous therapist who helped me all the way.
Meagan my sister in recovery.
Bishop Greer and Bishop Winder for support.
And for my Savior Jesus Christ for being my guide.

Although I know that there might be bumps in the road and temptation I know how to deal with it...I know I can...BECAUSE I CAN DO HARD THINGS!

HELLO LIFE!
HELLO INDEPENDENCE!

XOXO

Doesn't look like the start of a Caribbean cruise..does it?!

Dave and I celebrate our 10 year anniversary early.  Our anniversary isn't until June, but we wanted to escape the cold and let's face it...it was cheaper to go on a cruise in February then June.  So we did.
Any way we took a wonderful 11 day 10 night cruise to the Eastern Caribbean leaving out of New York.
It was so wonderful...Have I said it was wonderful...cause it really was wonderful.

HOWEVER...when we got to New York it was FREEZING! This was the day that the entire nation was washed over with freezing temps.  We were so grateful that we landed in New York safely because there was so much ice.  We took a red eye flight to JFK and I now know why they call it the red eye.  NO SLEEP DOES NOTHING FOR MY GREEN EYES!

We took a shuttle bus thingy that we found out about at the airport to the cruise terminal...and let me tell you it was so scary.  Those drivers are insane.  HOW DO THEY PASS A DRIVING TEST?!  I leaned over to Dave and said "honey, you're a really good driver." (If you know how Dave drives then you can understand)

When we got on our beautiful boat we got to go eat.  I hadn't eaten since dinner the night before and it was now 12-ish.  So I was a  bit hungry.

We couldn't really go outside on the decks because it was so cold and iced over so the only place outside we could go on the ship was a small deck on the back.

WE were so ready to blow the NYC and head to a much warmer climate.

Stay tuned for more peeks at our fabulous...and much needed vacation!

XOXO
Tired from a long flight and NO sleep!

This was so yummy..so I had to take a picture of it.

Doesn't it look cold...cause it was!

Ice

more ice

Yes...more ice!

oh and once more..ICE! It was FREEZING!

Finally we were leaving!

Bye Bye New York!

Hello Warm weather...(well in a few days we would reach warm weather!)

My sweet Elle.

I wanted to try out my new lens I got and so I asked Elle just to sit in this chair.  I really wasn't shooting to keep any pictures just testing settings with this new lens.  So I didn't care that her hair was a mess, or she was playing with her baby doll...cause at the moment all I cared about was my new toy.  Well...I'm glad I didn't care about what she was doing because I got these sweet, tender un-posed...honest pictures of my sweet Elle.  Oh these really are the moments when I wish she would just stay the way she is and never get bigger.

XOXO

Lazy Mornings

When Elle was off track I just let the girls do whatever.  Our mornings weren't so tidy...but I loved it.  We would hang out on the floor amongst the toys and watch Elmo for Ava and Good Luck Charlie for Elle and drink juice boxes and just enjoy the mornings together.  I love my life!

XOXO

One HUGE egg!

We have chickens right?
Well we haven't been getting eggs for awhile because some dogs got in and killed 90% of our chickens (SAD RIGHT?) But we still had some.  But they were scared to death so we haven't gotten any eggs for a long while.  Right before Christmas they started laying again.  I love our eggs...they simply taste better!

Anyway one of hens likes to lay ginormous eggs (ginormous...doesn't that remind you of Elf?).
This egg was more then DOUBLE the size of the other eggs. (The white eggs are store bought.)

I thought this would be a good picture.

This Egg is telling us it's okay to stand out in a crowd...and telling us to
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
Way to go EGG!

{Yes it was a double yolker!}

Blogging Bummer

I know friends I haven't personally blogged for sometime.  I'm sorry about that.
This is why.

Whenever I have a fun post or something silly to blog about, or even one of my infamous pet peeves it seems I get hate mail.  Okay not mail, but hate comments.  So I just simply have stopped blogging.  I know those meanies have kinda won, right?!

I just don't have the strength to deal with the bashing comments I get whenever I do a post...so I've been keeping it all simple.

Even the post about my baby picture and Ava and how we look alike, someone said "Bummer!"
(no I don't know who said it.)

I know I can moderate the comments, but even if I moderate them I still see them and it makes me sad.

So that is why I haven't been blogging much.

What do you buy?

I had to go grocery shopping today....for real...it was a chore.  Why? Because I haven't been really shopping since before Christmas so I was in need of a bunch of stuff....and none of it was fun stuff.
Anyway as I was checking out I noticed the lady in front of me and I kinda had to chuckle at the things she was buying...what she bought that was generic brand...and what she bought that was name brand.   For example so had generic shampoo....but name body wash. (this could be because of the price...but still.)  She had generic cans of soup...but name brand cans of vegetables.

So this all got me thinking...there is stuff that I don't care if I have the generic, or the no name...but there are things...that I must have the real deal.
For example.  Mac and Cheese.  It HAS to be the real blue box.  KRAFT only.

So what do you HAVE to buy that is name brand and not generic....or does it NEVER matter?

XOXO

Candy Houses

I've kinda been in a little bit of a blogging slump.  I think it's because I have SOOOO many pictures and not enough time to get them on here.  Anyway...I promise to do better.

Soo going back to December.  My husbands family has a tradition that they make candy houses every December.  This is an extended family thing....needless to say the house we do them out is getting WAY to small for so many of us.  However my little goats loved it.

XOXO

If I am M.I.A...

If you don't see me for awhile, it's because I've checked myself into the loony bin.

I really feel like I am going crazy!
I can't sleep at night because I think of all the things that I need to do...and how I'm going to get them done...oh and what if I don't get them done?! The anxiety!

Then I have Ava!  Holy Moly friends she is sending me shopping for a straight jacket.
Todays list of offenses:
  • Pouring out all my fabulous MAC foundation on my beautiful bathroom baby blue and white rug.  (super frowny)
  • USING my MAC Opulash Mascara to color on her face, my tile and grout.
  • Using my MAC lipliner to decorate my counter top in the kitchen.
  • Feeding Ruby my super cute dog nearly an entire bag of white chocolate and marshmellow popcorn yumminess.  (no wonder Ruby is getting fat)
  • Pouring out an entire bag of tortilla chips on my table and them crunching them up.
  • and filling up the toilet with all of her bath toys.

So like I said...if you don't hear from me for awhile please check the local mental hospital.

XOXO

I'm stealing this idea!

A cute friend of my did this on her blog and I thought it was a really fun idea.
She posted to those in her life who have made an impact on her life but didn't name names....so I'm going to do this too.

So this post is for YOU...you know who you are.

*You are seriously one of the most caring people I know.  You have always seemed to know when I need a friend.  You have been by my side at some of my biggest life events and given me such wonderful advice.  As you say "We Gals Rock"!  I love you more then you will ever know.

*For real you are the funniest person I know...no lie.  It's a shame that there is such a distance between us because sometimes I just need a fix of laughter that only you can dish out.  You are so very talented that I could be really jealous of but you just make me want to be better.  You entered my life at a place where my life was about to change and so was yours...we connected instantly and I am so grateful for scrap booking, the 1st season of the Bachelor, long bus rides, nasty hotel rooms, and accidental cuddling.

*Although we only got to be part of each others lives for about a year or so I treasure our friendship.  You always have something funny to say even though I'm sure you don't mean to.  You have a zest for life and such a fantastic outlook.  You could have become so bitter about so many lost jobs and moves but instead you look on the bright side of things.  I don't know if I could be that optimistic.  You have become such a shining example of optimism for me and someone who has left your print on my heart.

*I don't think you know how much you mean to me.  Actually I know you don't.  Most likely you won't even think this one is for you...but it is.  I've never felt close to anyone in this area of my life except you.  Although I know the feeling is most likely not mutual I'm okay with that.  I admire your independence and wish I had that kind of strength.  You're my favorite.

*You are one amazingly resourceful cookie!  Whenever I'm out at the store I think "how would she do this?".  I often wish I could spend hours with you learning your secrets and tips.  You have always been so easy to talk with and I wish I got to spend more time with you.  You make me want to be better.

*What can I say about you that is sufficient enough in this little tiny space?! Nothing is sufficient enough!  I wish we would have been better friends in H.S.  I feel like we missed so many important parts of each others lives.  HOWEVER today is what matters.  I'm grateful we are here now that our friendship is strong.  Out of ALL my true friends I've known you the longest.  You're awesome...."I won't keep ya!" bwahhhaa!

*I know you don't read this blog...but I can't write this post without a tribute to you.
YOU saved me!  In my darkest hours you listened and never judged.  I'm afraid to see it end because I'm better.  I wish we would have met some other way so we could be friends forever....I dread February 18th cause I know what it might mean.  I'm alive because of you.

*Oh so many things to say about you...where to begin.  I remember when I got SOOO mad at you because you were dating someone I didn't want you too.  And I remember saying "you're supposed to marry 'him'".  I was hard on you about that...I'm glad I was.  Your relationship with your hubby is something I admire and look up to.  You are so talented and crafty and just the best momma!  I admire you in so many ways.

*I'm sad we are not close the way I always hoped we would be.  When we first met I think we were on our way to being close and having a great relationship...something stopped that.  However when we first met you made me feel like I belonged and at the time that was very important. Because you made me feel like I belonged at the start...I now know that I belong, so thank you.

*You are my rock! My world, My everything.  Everything thing I can become is because of your love.

*So many times I thought I would never help you.  I thought you would never let me in.  I'm glad that part of our lives are over.  Where would I be without you?  I'm so glad you are close...that I can huck something out my window and hit you...makes me happy!  "be nice to your sister one day they'll be your best friends..." who knew they were right?!

*Cry fest 1996, lady bug shorts, shopping trips, alanis, coverlooks, taco time and hot sauce, blueberry dance co outfits and so much more that's what I call true friendship!

To all you who have been part of my life I say
XOXO

Where does time go?

Tomorrow my baby turns 2!
Where does the time go?

Ava is so spunky and funny!
She really is a sweet girl, but she is tough as nails!
She picks on her big sister.  You would think Ava is the big sister.
Ava loves Ruby and her "honey".  (Her Aunt...my sister).

Ava is such a joy...I'm seriously the luckiest!

It's better to be nice

There is this local photographer whose style I adore.  Her editing is unreal! Really...her work is inspiring.  HOWEVER she is NOT NICE!
I am the kind of person and type of photographer who doesn't mind sharing my locations, tricks, secrets, advice, blah blah blah!
I had a question I wanted to ask her it was about a location, that many photographers have used I just can't seem to find it.  So I shot her off an email asking her.  A few months passed and she never answered me.  So I emailed her again.  I was really polite and quite complementary.  She replied saying that she wasn't the type of person to give out advice freely, and if I were to pay her to "learn" from her that she would be happy to share some of her tips and "secret" locations.  For real?!  I've had many photographers around the nation contact me asking me how I did certain things and I'm more then happy to share a few helpful tips.
Like I said this location that I'm talking about I've seen MANY MANY others use it, it's not like it is her own private hideaway.  One day it's gonna come back and bite her in the bum for not being friendly to others in the business.
Anyway...I say it's better to be nice then not nice at all.  After all...Santa is watching!
{oh and so is Jesus}

XOXO

Dry skin!

I'm at my wits end with my skin!
I really take such good care of my skin I do.  BUT MY HANDS ARE SO DRY!
On my right hand my thumb and pinkie are so dry, cracked and itchy that I think I would rather amputate them then deal with the itchy pain anymore.  It really is bad!
Does anyone know of any good solutions or remedies...besides a knife!
I'm serious it's really really REALLY BAD!
Help out your itchy sister!

XOXO

Ava and her books!

Ava loves books..but this is ridiculous!
I came out of my room to see her sitting at the END of a trail of books.
I cleaned these up 3 times today!
CRAZY CRAZY!

SO I want to know who is looking in.

SO here is what I want to hear from you.

Where are you from?
